“Taurasia ab vigne opime”
“Taurasi from the best vineyard”
- Tito Livio, Ab Urbe condita
The most reliable hypothesis about the origin of the town of Taurasi starring the population Osco-Sabellic, which reflects the name. In fact the term "Taurasi" represent the bull, leader and symbol of the tribe of "taurasini", ancient inhabitants of Irpinia. In the third century. B.C. the Samnite wars led to the conquest of the territory by the Romans, in which were strengthening the agricultural structure. Under Augustus and after the Punic Wars, in which taurasini sided with Hannibal, the territory was deducted and given to the Roman veterans, that intensified cultivation grafting the "Hellenic vitis" and built several villas.
The renowned wine produced in these areas, is entirely produced by this ancient grape: the Aglianico.
The word "Aglianico" would be a mispronunciation occurred in the Aragonese courts of the word “Hellenic” or even "Eleanico" (from the city of Elea). Since its introduction, Aglianico is entered by force on the tables of the nobility, accompanying meals of many prominent people, and through the centuries has consolidated this role still remaining predominant vine variety.
